Wrinkle relaxers and fillers, explained plainly

Read what these treatments are and what to ask a provider, then request a consultation when you are ready.

Why injectables are handled differently

Facials sit on the skin. Injectables go into or under it, which is why they are treated as medical procedures. That shows up in a few ways:

  • They are given by licensed providers where state law allows.
  • Each state, including California, sets who may inject and what supervision applies.
  • A health history and medicine list are needed before anything is decided.
  • Aftercare and follow-up are usually part of the plan.

Within that frame, the two main types are wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers. A licensed provider explains both at a consultation and says what, if anything, is suitable for you.

Who may inject in California

Who may give injectables is set by state rules, and they differ. Depending on the state, injectors may include physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and, in some places, dentists. Many states also have rules about supervision, about who must do the first assessment, and about where injections can be given.

Injectables are given by licensed providers where state law allows. You can ask any provider: What is your license? Who supervises you, if anyone? How much training do you have with this product? Who handles it if something goes wrong after the visit? A licensed provider should answer without hesitation.

Planning around events

Bruising and swelling are possible after injectables, so timing is worth thinking about before you go ahead. Look at your calendar for weddings, photos, travel, presentations or anything else where you want to feel at ease. Note those dates and bring them to the consultation.

Also note any dental work or medical procedures coming up, and when you last had injectables, if ever. The licensed provider can then say whether now is a sensible time or whether to wait. Injectables are given by licensed providers where state law allows, and the provider sets the plan with you.

Questions about injectables

Can I have injectables while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Most providers do not give wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If either applies, or you are planning a pregnancy, tell the provider at the start of the consultation. They will decide what is suitable, which may mean waiting.

What side effects are possible?

Bruising, swelling and tenderness where the injection was given are commonly discussed, and less common complications exist too. Ask the provider to explain the side effects for the specific product, how they would handle a complication, and who to contact afterward. For anything that worries you, see a doctor.

How do I know which product a provider is using?

Ask. A provider can tell you the product type, whether it is a wrinkle relaxer or a dermal filler, and why they suggest it. You can also ask for the product name and amount to be noted in your records, which helps if you see a different provider later.
